It’s gained from cotton plant bolls. A cotton plant can give us good quality cotton if it has 150-200 frost-free days, so that’s why it is mainly grown in warmer climates.
Cotton accounts for one-third of the world's consumption of textile fibres. Its history dates back to 4,000 years BC. It first started to appear in Pakistan, Egypt and in the territory of Mexico. Its consumption and processing have increased steadily since then. In the twentieth century, cotton processing shifted from Europe and the USA over to Asia. Today, cotton prices are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
The price of cotton moves up and down according to a variety of influences, for example it depends on weather, or even fuel prices. Cotton is characterised by its tensile strength, which increases with increasing humidity. It is a very absorbent material. The quality of cotton is distinguished by fibres. Longer fibres are better and therefore more expensive.
We come into contact with cotton products every day. It’s used for products that can withstand frequent washing. These mainly include cotton clothes (mainly summer clothes such as dresses, skirts, T-shirts) as well as sheets and linen which are also often made of cotton.
