Blueprints
A unique printing technique inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage since 2018 – this is blueprint, a technique that has become a favorite of printers in Central and Eastern Europe. Standard blueprinting is created by inversion, i.e. negative printing, where the areas of the fabric that are to remain white are printed, and thus they are protected from dyeing when submerged in blue ink. The blue dyeing is achieved by means of imported indigo, a natural dye (the different shades of blue correspond to the amount of soaking) and the protective layer is then removed during washing.
The rotary blueprint by Textil.eu – a wholesaler of cotton and linen fabrics made in the EU – faithfully imitates this technique and is widely used for trachten fabrics, garments and decorations for regional traditions and festivals, as well as for casual trendy clothing and outfits.
